本研究中心从宏观和微观两个方面致力于鸟类生态研究，具体包括：（1）森林鸟类群落构建与演替成因研究，通过海南尖峰岭、广东车八岭、广东鼎湖山等华南地区森林鸟类群落研究，试图阐明森林鸟类组成与植被的关系、森林鸟类演替的内在规律、鸟类混合群与生态位的关系等；（2）华南沿海红树林及滨海湿地鸟类多样性研究，重点研究湿地鸟类的迁徙规律、种群动态及对气候变化的响应；（3）鸟类的种群遗传和分子系统演化研究，重点研究华南地区有特色的画眉科鸟类，如灰眶雀鹛、黑喉噪鹛、黑领噪鹛、小黑领噪鹛等的亚种分化，特有种或亚种的形成以及地质历史事件对物种演化的影响。近十年来，承担各类科研项目20多项，包括国家自然科学基金、粤澳合作项目、广东省自然科学基金项目等。获省级科技进步奖2项，申请国家发明专利5项，在国内外学术刊物发表论文60多篇，出版专著5本。
